This year’s Legislative Event will take place in two parts.

Participants will be able to discuss grassroots advocacy strategies and how legislative advocacy can impact the professions of SLP/AUD and the individuals we serve. They will learn ways to advocate for specific bills relevant to our field, and what to expect when visiting legislators at the State Capitol and strategies for communicating with policy makers.

Learner Outcomes:
Participants will be able to:

  • Identify two benefits of legislative advocacy
  • Identify three strategies for grassroots involvement
  • Identify one current issue with relevance to SLP/AUD professionals under legislative consideration in our state

Time-Ordered Agenda:

  • 6:00 pm – 6:10 pm: Introductions and meeting agenda review
  • 6:10 pm – 6:20 pm: Review and discussion of MSHA legislative issues/initiatives
  • 6:20 pm – 6:50 pm: Legislative process; Strategies for successful legislative visits
  • 6:50 pm – 7:00 pm: Questions/Wrap up

Presenter Bios:

Brent Hemphill – He brings over 25 years of experience in politics and government to his clients. He first became active in Missouri government in the early 1990’s working for the Missouri Attorney General’s Office followed by the Missouri State Senate. In 2001, Hemphill started his own governmental relations and lobbying firm, Brent Hemphill & Associates. BHA represents a broad and diverse range of clients including large corporations, healthcare systems and various statewide trade associations. Hemphill works closely with legislators, statewide elected officials, state departments and agency executives. He is widely known for his experience, expertise and integrity in shaping issues to achieve the results desired by his clients. Hemphill holds a Bachelor of Science from Kansas State University and resides in Jefferson City with his wife and family.

Emily Buxbaum, MS CCC-SLP – Emily Buxbaum is an Asst. Professor and the Director of Clinical Education in the Saint Louis University Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences department. In that role, she oversees the operations of the Reinert Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, a no-fee community clinic on the SLU campus, as well as graduate students’ external clinical work in the community and their professional preparation for SLP certification. Her research interests are professional preparation of grad students, supervision in SLP clinical education and clinical preparation of students across the health sciences to competently work with trans and gender diverse populations.

Participants will learn about current legislative issues impacting the field of speech pathology and audiology and receive updates on legislative topics within our state, connect with policy makers, and learn techniques to effectively communicate with legislators about issues impacting our professions.

*Can take self-guided tour of the Capitol anytime. Participants can go to the information desk located on the first floor (right after going through security) and they will have brochures for the tour.
